Volume Cities

Volume Cities
Students are not just building cities in a recent project, but they are also building their math skills.

Mrs. Ekblad's class is building "Volume Cities" using Project-Based learning. Part of the project is designing their city, and drawing it out on graph paper. Then, they begin to build the structures with different materials; some groups chose clay, some chose carboard boxes, and some used a mixture of materials. Once the structures are built, students practice math skills by measuring the volume of each building in their city.

Every student is able to use their strengths! Some like the behind-the-scenes math work, and some excel at physically building the city structures. One group thought of a creative idea to use a 3-D pen, where they trace the design on the graph paper to "build-up" the structure into a 3-D object.
